FELIOS - Customised online production planning

After a six-month lead time, DESMA has now switched its "Felios" Advanced Planning System (APS) online. The system allows precision precision capacity planning of individual workplaces, material availability and deadline requirements on a day-related basis along the entire value chain with appropriate data integration in SAP-ERP. Thus status of individual orders is available at the push of a button, generating benefits also for customers.
Manufacturers of special machines like DESMA are under constant pressure to optimise order processing, production processes and component ranges as well as the requisite multi-dimensional planning tasks, always seeking to achieve shorter lead times coupled with improved quality and lower costs. In this situation the successful introduction of Felios is of decisive strategic importance for the competitiveness and hence the future of the enterprise.
APS packages use algorithms to calculate e.g. the production quantities necessary through all manufacturing phases. The system takes into consideration things like available capacities in HR, machinery and materials. In effect this planning tool provides not only assistance in planning, it is also an early warning system embedded in manufacturing control, procurement and sales.
The Felios software package provides early indications of potential bottlenecks of resources and their causes. At the same time the system automatically displays suitable solution options. As a result timely counter-measures can be taken and introduced with minimised costs. Analyses of current status also provide immediate feedback about the likely impact on order deadlines.
This aspect means that the sales department has access to an effective tool: the fast online simulation provides immediate assessment of whether customers' preferred deadlines are feasible. The system also reflects on how new orders might affect the current order backlog. In addition it provides information on realistic options to satisfy the delivery requests of all customers.
Switching Felios online means that one of DESMA's major projects has now reached its decisive phase. The run-up period included comprehensive investigations, many training sessions together with information events and of course the adaptation of interfaces to existing systems. Felios is implemented as a complement to existing production planning systems. The use of Felios enables DESMA to link various goals - for example increased delivery reliability, decreased lead times and even more transparency in order processing. A special challenge is and remains optimising cross-plant processes. Ultimately, customers will reap direct benefits from improved transparency in DESMA production.
