High-Pressure Injection Units as Trouble-Shooters
|
Actually the DESMA design engineers are not aware of problems, because they regard apparently insoluble
tasks as a challenge. And the leading machine manufacturer faced a challenge like this almost two years ago.
Reason of it : The automotive market was calling for more economical cars. In order to reduce consumption
without having to renounce of too much power, they focussed on less cubic capacity. The achieved minimization
in consumption, however, entailed of course secondary effects such as an increased heat development in the
motor that, in turn, could not be tolerated by the obsolete sealing elements. The question about a material
which endures thermal stress was responded by the compound suppliers with fluor caoutchouc(FKM) - a heat-resistant
mixture of few rubber and much rock meal. That was the challenge posed to DESMA: How to process this high-viscosity
compound that by a factor of 25 is more expensive than rubber and therefore has to be used economically? The
answer from the technology forge was high-pressure injection moulding combined with less-waste cold runner block
technology. Since the high-pressure injection units, that press the FKM into the FlowControl cold runner
block at 3,300 bar, have gone into production almost one year ago, the demand is soaring. Not only because
high-pressure moulding is currently the unique method to process the high-viscosity compound in a reasonable
way. "The subject waste minimization is a crucial factor given the prices per kilo ranging between 50 and 100 €",
says Harald Schmid, the General Sales Manager. And here DESMA scores with its FlowControl cold runner technology that
reduces waste to a minimum due to article direct injection. These high-pressure injection units have already proved
successful several times as trouble-shooters in practical operation.
