DESMA at the Rubber Expo - 100 years of synthetic rubber

Fritz Hoffmann Two anniversaries at once were in the focus of this year's Rubber Expo in the USA: the 100th anniversary of the ACS, the American Chemical Society, rubber division and the successful production of synthetic rubber 100 years ago without which the development of today's automotive industry and mobility would not be conceivable. Many representatives of the North American rubber industry had therefore come to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. DESMA attended as well and showcased its potential as a provider of modern technology.

In September 1909 the chemist, Fritz Hofmann, achieved it after 3 years only: the patent for synthetic rubber was granted, the German Emperor Wilhelm II was "highly satisfied" with the new pneumatic car tyre and the company Bayer - on behalf of which Hofmann had been acting - already produced 2,500 tons of this new material in Leverkusen between 1915 and 1918. Hofmann died in 1956 at the age of 90, decorated with many honors, and could live to see the incipient, tempestuous development of his invention, without which modern tyre industry would not be thinkable.

FlowControl Display100 years later, the market situation has clearly changed. As domestically there is excess capacity in the automotive supply chain, the rubber part manufacturers show keen interest in other lines of industry such as infrastructure and energy. Particularly against the background of the strongly demanded optimization of production processes, DESMA presented its range of highly efficient cold runner examples. Of special interest was the interactive display of the 8-nozzle FlowControl cold runner with machine control. Another exhibit was an example of an open nozzle cold runner from the in-house mould shop. By means of the virtual show booth "DESMA virtual", nice talking points could be installed at four kiosks of the booth and the complete machinery portfolio was interactively presented. Attendees from India, Australia, Mexico and Venezuela guaranteed a good turnout.

New for 2009 was the shared booth space with Wickert Hydraulic Presses of Landau, Germany. Wickert utilized approximately 30 % of the booth space and they had a dedicated kiosk with two representatives. DESMA USA represents the Wickert product line and provides after sales support and service. Both companies conveyed a "good synergy", specifically regarding the benefit from each other's strengths and the improvement of their product lines.
