New supplier portal saves time, money and trouble
|
Order acknowledgements, inquiries and notifications of change cause a great deal of paperwork and efforts until an order is
properly executed.
With the new supplier portal that DESMA has recently launched for the communication with its ancillary
companies, almost everything is now done via keypress and hence more swiftly and reliably. Since early 2008 the suppliers,
by using an identifiation number, can log on through the internet to the SAP system of DESMA and enter all order-specific
data there. In practice it works in such a way that the DESMA material planners order their pressure plates, welded components,
tie rods, moving mounting platen and custom-made products by PC. The supplier concerned receives the message "Attention Order!"
online on the screen. Then he logs on and acknowledges price, date of delivery, scope and order number. If the supplier is not able
to meet the requested date, this is equally stored in the portal log, a kind of information data base, as it is done when DESMA
requires yet more material. Both sides can always see who has done what. "There is no need of order acknowledgements anymore that
one has to receive and check, it is anytime possible to find out if something differs and all are communicating at the same level
with each other", says Bernd Köhl, Head of material logistics. Besides process costs this saves a lot of trouble as well:
Misunderstandings that may occur when several persons in charge are processing the same order on the basis of differently up-to-date
information are a thing of the past.
At this time 29 German suppliers are integrated into the portal, after its completion there are
planned to be 50 or more. This process optimization by means of consistent data also goes down well among the suppliers. "Now we
exactly know when we have to deliver what and planning is a wonderful thing", Köhl is often told. He feels confident about
this innovation, too. "It is just great", he praises his colleagues from the purchasing department who came up with this idea of asupplier portal.
