Full commitment (not only) for DESMA

For seven years James Wood has been contributing to the success of DESMA in the USA. And this with full commitment, not only with DESMA: in addition to different key positions that he has held in the service and mould shop departments, he also served the United States as a Sergeant in the Army National Guard and as a Military Police Team Leader. Meanwhile the past service technician is passionate about mould building.

James Wood began work at DESMA seven years ago. Even at that time he was a member of the Kentucky Army National Guard. National Guardsmen are volunteers who spend weekends and several weeks per year maintaining their skills. Particularly the subject "security of the USA" plays a crucial role in this training. National guardsmen can anytime be mobilized. James Wood lived under this uncertainty. Then it really occurred: he was deployed to Iraqi to be a Military Police Team Leader for 15 months. But as against many other National Guardsmen he did not have to lose any sleep over the worrying question about "the time afterwards". Since James Wood has worked and excelled as a Service Engineer, DESMA USA readily maintained communication with him during his deployment to Iraqi and offered him a job when he returned stateside.

No sooner said than done. After 15 months James Wood returned to DESMA to his new assignment.

With the new assignment - working in the project engineering department - new challenges were waiting for him. Creation of presentations and mould layouts as well as the development of secondary equipment in cooperation with the vendors. But also the work with the local machine shop equipment was not neglected: James Wood carried out the preparations for moulding trials in the DESMA USA demonstration lab in Kentucky. "I enjoy working with my hands", he says and explains: "During this time, I was able to learn the basics of machine shop lathes and vertical mills". These experiences and his familiarity with machine shop equipment would soon be a great advantage: because in 2008 DESMA USA opened a mould shop at its North American location and was looking for such skilled as well as committed employees. Thus James Wood was an ideal candidate. This time, he transferred to the mould shop and started work first as a machinist. For the first year, James Wood worked with the newly hired journeymen mould makers and learned to assemble and fit moulds and cold runners. "James' expertise and work has been an essential part of sending the moulds out ready to use", reports Derek Langtry, the Mould Shop Manager, and adds: "Having moulds ready for production at the time of arrival is a strong selling point of DESMA."

To this day James Wood has been loyal to mould making.

But the cold runners and moulds that he once assembled only he produces now himself. Learning how to operate the DMG Gildemeister CNC lathe was another big step in his career. "Our mould shop is growing so fast that opportunities for advancement exist for all the employees" says Derek Langtry. James Wood has benefitted from these opportunities and is possibly involved in your next project with his abilities.
